Looking back! Construction of power station...

Project: Construction of power station for BVI electricity board, British Virgin Islands, 1988 / 1989.

The initial visit involved sourcing materials to produce concrete complying with the specification. Materials were eventually sourced from Tortola (British Virgin Islands); St Croix (United States Virgin Islands); and Barbuda (Antigua and Barbuda) for sand. The second visit to the British Virgin Islands was made to take core samples from poorly compacted concrete to determine the extent of the voids, determine the structural integrity of the concrete and recommend remedial action. The main challenges came about during the second visit, including the need to air freight all the necessary equipment to drill the core samples – and work on site being suspended for a week before and after the arrival of ‘Hurricane Hugo’ on September 19, 1989.
